A little bit of history
New Cross gets its name from a coaching house called the Golden Cross, which once stood near where the New Cross House pub stands today. New Cross Gate took its name from the 1718 tollgate that stood to the west of New Cross. Once a pretty village, New Cross became more developed in the 19th Century, partly thanks to wealthy livery company the Haberdashers.
Need to know
Our area was known as the New Cross Tangle in the 19th Century, due to the confusion of having two stations both called New Cross. Happily the confusion has been sorted out these days with one renamed New Cross Gate.
There is a Sainsbury's in New Cross and Morrisons and Asda up the road in Peckham. There are also markets every day in Peckham and Deptford and every Saturday on Telegraph Hill. You'll also find The Allotment grocery shop, New Hardware store and Something Special gift shop on New Cross Road and Lloyds pharmacy round the corner on Queens Road.
NEW CROSS IS ONE OF LONDON'S BEST KEPT SECRETS.
