Location
Sydenham, a large area spread across several different boroughs, is a bustling neighbourhood with a range of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from, and is exceptionally well served for green spaces, being surrounded by award winning parks. Since its incorporation into the Overground network, Sydenham has become well connected to the City and Docklands, as well as being a short hop away from the entertainments of the Crystal Palace Triangle. Families with young children are spoilt for choice too, with all types of schools being represented here.
Forest Hill is a leafy residential area with a cluster of hip cafes and cosy pubs near its namesake railway station. Set in landscaped gardens with a weekly farmers market and outdoor summer concerts, the family-friendly Horniman Museum has an aquarium, a beloved stuffed walrus, and a musical instrument collection. At the edge of the neighbourhood, Blythe Hill Fields park has sweeping views of the city skyline.
Catford may be one of the last areas in this part of South East London to resist urban renewal, but if illustrious neighbours Brockley and Forest Hill are anything to go by, it wont be far behind. Although plans to reroute the South Circular have been scrapped, an extensive regeneration of the town centre is still in the pipeline. Its still possible to get a reasonably priced house or flat, often with outdoor space, and during the summer a pleasant haze of BBQ smoke and garden chatter fills the area. Some fine views of London can be enjoyed from many of the local parks including family friendly Mountsfield Park, which also hosts the annual Lewisham Peoples Day, a community focused festival, and there are excellent cycling and walking opportunities along the Waterlink Way.
Catford locals are often fiercely proud of the town, and run a number of programmes including an orchard and a bird watching group in Blythe Hill Fields. And they are engaged in local issues, notably the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign, that organises talks and events to raise money and awareness. Many Catford locals have lived here for generations and now share their community with first time buyers and young families looking for more space and affordable property.
