A little bit of history
Clapham High Street traces part of an ancient Roman Road that ran from London to Chichester. This fact was revealed by a roman stone which can now be found outside Clapham Library. The name Clapham is thought to mean 'homestead near a hill' and comes from the Old English 'Cloppa Hamm'.
Need to know
Locals affectionately call Clapham 'Cla'am' in honour of having become one of south London's most sought-after areas.
Clapham offers all the usual high street suspects of Sainsbury's, Superdrug, Boots and Oddbins etc and much, much more besides. On the high street we love the charming bookshop Clapham Books and the progressive supermarket Today's Living. On Abbeville Road, AKA The Village, you'll find delicious ready meals of Cook, favourite tipples at Abbeville Wines, delicious cakes and breads at Le Petit Boulanger and shabby chic antiques at Les Sardines Antiques. We also recommend Venn Street market, a local community food market which takes place every Saturday.
THE CHOICE OF EXCELLENT CUISINE FROM AROUND THE WORLD IS ONE OF CLAPHAM'S BIGGEST ATTRACTIONS.
