Forest Hill is probably the last hidden gem in South London. Located in the London Borough of Lewisham and positioned between Dulwich & Sydenham. The area has benefitted since the addition of the East London line which opened in 2010, making Shoreditch and the City easily accessible in addition to reaching Victoria in 35 mins and London Bridge in 14 mins. The area is known for its leafy streets, keenly priced property, great views and fantastic local amenities. With a variety of excellent schools, it is a fantastic location for families.
A little bit of history
Forest Hill remained sparsely populated until the late 19th Century. Like many London suburbs, it was the 1839 arrival of the railway that commercialised our area, replacing the now defunct Croydon Canal. The relocation of Crystal Palace from Hyde Park to Sydenham saw large homes spring up round the western end of Forest Hill, and 1884 saw the construction of the Dartmouth Road swimming pool, which is now London's oldest pool. Today Forest Hill is an increasingly popular residential area.
Need to know
Forest Hill was recently announced as a winner of one of the Mary Portas pilot grants, which will see a cash injection to renovate the high street, with empty shops being utilised as 'pop-up' commercial spaces. Alongside the Jack & Jill, Shop Revolution and Market Makers projects, it should see a complete rejuvenation of shopping in the area.
Lots of amazing things are about to happen to Forest Hill's shopping, however the area already has plenty of good stuff to offer. Bunka is a wonderful little shop for clothing, ornaments and unique gifts. Stag & Bow has all your haberdashery and craft requirements covered. While Honor Oak's Walnut & Orange produces the most delicious freshly-baked bread.
