We are proud of our roots – the company started out in Mayfair in the 1830s, under the stewardships of the Winkworth brothers. Today the business continues to go from strength to strength.
Our emergence as one of the biggest single-brand agencies in the capital, and our rapid expansion outside London, has been built on our use of the successful franchising model. Where other estate agencies have run centralised operations, we have identified the benefits of teaming up with established local agents with ambitions to expand, or with new players in the market, to build a true powerhouse of a brand.
The franchising model has been used in all sorts of business sectors, and given budding entrepreneurs the chance to develop their skills, and boost their businesses, under the aegis of a parent brand. It can be a highly satisfactory arrangement for both parties.
And the great thing about franchising is that it is a dynamic business model, targeting growth and expansion. Many of our own franchisees now own more than one Winkworth franchise. As their business confidence has expanded, so has the geographical area in which they operate. They could have gone it alone. In many cases, they did go alone, and prospered, before opting to go down the franchise route. But it was linking up with Winkworth that often held the key to their expansion.
Judicious use of the Winkworth brand has enabled them to make big savings in such areas as online marketing, which has become ever more important in the internet age. They have also, crucially, been able to take advantage of the kind of dedicated training we are able to offer our franchisees.
They may be learning on the job, to an extent, but we are also learning on the job, constantly looking for new ways to support our franchisees while also allowing them the independence they need to prosper.
Franchising, by its very nature is a two-way process. If we have given our franchisees the benefit of our nationwide experience, they have given us, in many cases, the benefit of their local knowledge, setting up franchises in areas where they have been operating for many years. Between us we have also brought enthusiasm, the elusive X-factor which stops successful brands from going stale.
And if we bang the drum for franchising as loudly as we bang the drum for our company, it is because we believe the two have now become inseparable. It’s a business model that works, founded on the tried-and-tested principle of collaboration.
