A history of Winkworth

Winkworth was the first estate agency business to be franchised in the UK...

Established in 1835 the Winkworth family ran the Mayfair and country house business until the early 1960’s. Mann & Co (now part of the Countrywide group) bought and held the business until Simon Agace took it on in 1974. At this time there were three offices trading as Winkworth in Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Holland Park. By 1981 Winkworth had expanded to ten offices and after a trip to America, Simon decided to franchise the business.

In 2004, and with over 25 Winkworth franchised offices, Simon became non-executive chairman of the business and handed the reigns to his son, Dominic.

In 2009 Dominic successfully led Winkworth to float on the AIM market, employing board members that still remain in play today.

Over the last 43 years the Winkworth franchising network has sustainably grown from three offices to 97. The franchising support team, now based back where it all began in Mayfair has grown from three staff members to 31.
