Women in Franchising

This time last year the ONS stated that self-employment in the UK was at its highest since records began 40 years ago...

by Gina Piper

The number of self-employed people has risen by 650,000 since 2008 and now stands at 4.5 million. Historically, women have made up just over a quarter of self-employed people, but since 2008 have made up 58% of the newly self-employed, with this figure rising to 70% during 2014.

The BFA/Natwest survey recently revealed that women account for just 23% of franchisees in the UK, and in the last two years only 17% of new franchisees were female.

Here at Winkworth we believe franchising can be a good solution for women looking to start their own business. We’ll provide you with strong back office support; from Marketing and IT to Client Services, Legal and Compliance departments, allowing you the freedom to concentrate and run your business on a day-to day basis. Winkworth has a large network of offices throughout the UK, so you’ll be part of a bigger network of independent business owners, and part of the family.

Iona Everett, Sales negotiator in our Bath office, says the best thing about working for Winkworth is “Enthusing over beautiful properties in the city I feel so passionately about and meeting new people. I like to learn as much as I can about our applicants and build up a relationship. It’s rewarding when I’m told that I’ve made buyers feel valued and gone above and beyond. Also, working as part of a great team here in Bath. The camaraderie and laughs make the challenges much easier.”

Partner of our Devizes and Marlborough offices, Lisa Jacobs, started at Winkworth in 2011, “very part time as we still had young children at home.”

“My husband Simon wanted to branch out on his own and we heard about the Winkworth franchising model and saw this as an opportunity to have our own business with the support and backing of a franchisor, and also to hit the high street with a known name rather than starting from scratch.” “The best part about the job is when things go right and we help people find their dream home – helping people move on to their next chapter and being part of that is very satisfying. And of course, seeing lots of lovely houses!”

Lucinda Richardson, (Ric to her friends) is a Director of our established Notting Hill office, and has worked for the Winkworth brand for 21 years. Ric fits the role to work around her busy lifestyle. Having two very young children means that the flexibility of her working day is perfect. “Having my emails and taking calls on my work phone means that I can be flexible whilst keeping work continuity. There is a good back up in the office to support this.”

Ric advises listening to people as the most important attribute when starting in agency. “Treat them how you would like to be treated!” “If you want to run a Winkworth Franchise, one of the most important elements is your staff. Employ great people and look after them, as the longevity really benefits everyone.”

Winkworth is always on the lookout for women to join our network and we have lots of opportunities across the UK for you to start the process to becoming a business owner. So whether you’re an experienced senior manager in the industry or an entrepreneur who likes all that the Winkworth brand represents, we want to hear from you.
