The number of self-employed people has risen by 650,000 since 2008 and now stands at 4.5 million. Historically, women have made up just over a quarter of self-employed people, but since 2008 have made up 58% of the newly self-employed, with this figure rising to 70% during 2014.
The BFA/Natwest survey recently revealed that women account for just 23% of franchisees in the UK, and in the last two years only 17% of new franchisees were female.
