Chris Collinge opened a Winkworth office in Sway, Hampshire, in 2015, and is now planning to buy a second one in the same area. He explains why he chose the franchise route:

“It all comes down to the name above the door. I have worked as an estate agent all my adult life, first for a national agency, then as a small independent. The trouble was that I had to compete with some rather larger independents on my patch – this is quite a prosperous area, with not many properties on the market for less than £350,000.

One of the things that attracted me to Winkworth was the fact that it would improve my access to the London market-place

“One of my former work colleagues had bought a Winkworth franchise on the Hampshire coast. It had obviously worked out well for him, so I decided to take the plunge and join the franchisees’ club. My wife and I were able to raise the necessary start-up capital, and our first eighteen months of trading have gone pretty well. We now have three full-time and one part-time staff and are contemplating expanding our area of operation by acquiring a second franchise in Milford.

“One of the things that attracted me to Winkworth was the fact that it would improve my access to the London market-place - quite a lot of Londoners buy homes in this part of Hampshire. It has also, of course, given my agency the cachet of a nationally known brand.”

Mark Bygott has owned a Winkworth franchise in West Bridgford, just south of Nottingham, since 2015. Here he tells his story:

“You might say I am a veteran franchisee, having owned a Halifax Property Services franchise, then one with another estate agency. The first experience was very good, the second less so, so I ended up having to choose between setting up as an independent or finding another franchisor. I had admired the Winkworth brand from afar and did what I would recommend anyone else to do in my situation: rang about twenty Winkworth franchisees, some in London, some in the country, to pick their brains. They all spoke very positively about the company and, having been linked with it for nearly eighteen months now, I can see why.

“They offer excellent support with branding and, through their PR-wing, can help me achieve critical mass in marketing. Also, because they are more upmarket than the other franchises I have owned, they have enabled me to target another segment of the market. I made sure that, when I re-opened last year under the Winkworth banner, I did an office refit that has been a magnet for new clients.”
