Tips for Christmas hosting

Entertaining this Christmas? There are so many things you have to juggle during the Christmas season. Here are some top tips on how to host the ultimate Christmas get together!

Christmas is the most wonderful time of year. Dark nights are lit up with twinkling lights and although it’s cold outside our homes exude warmth. With Christmas comes celebrations and this is when family and friends start to descend. Homes that are normally spacious can suddenly feel cramped, and an oven that can easily accommodate a Sunday roast struggles with a turkey and all the trimmings. With this in mind, we offer our top tips on making Christmas hosting this year as stress free as possible.

Festive feasting

The cooking at Christmas is endless; what should be a pleasurable experience often becomes a marathon of endurance. Elbows are out as we navigate our overflowing trolleys through packed supermarkets and fight for the last jar of mincemeat on the shelf. Make it easier on yourself and avoid the supermarket. Plan your shopping list in advance and have everything delivered at a time to suit you, preferably in the evening when children are in bed. Remember to stock up on additional nibbles as you’ll undoubtedly have unexpected guests at some point, and see if you can take some of the stress away by buying the Christmas cake, pudding and mince pies rather than making everything.

Creating space

If you’re hosting, it’s easy for a large room to suddenly feel small as it fills up with a Christmas tree, presents and people. Remove the things that you won’t need over the festivities; it’s amazing how taking a few side tables and bean bags out can suddenly make a room feel more spacious again. A temporary redistribution into a bedroom or the garage if you’re having a party or hosting lunch can make all the difference to everyone’s comfort.

Gift drawer

More often than not, you’re given a gift by someone you weren’t expecting to give you anything. For these occasions it’s a good idea to have a few choice treats, wrapped in a drawer ready. Truffle oil for a foodie. Bananagrams for a neighbour or a scented candle for a female friend are always well received and ensure there are no embarrassing, one-sided, exchanges.

Entertainment

A few good films up your sleeve can entertain everyone and get them out of your hair for a couple of hours. Family games are also a brilliant distraction, so have a look at the most popular and invest. Speak Out has been highly recommended.

Small jobs you’ve been putting off

It’s still November so you still have plenty of time left to get the little jobs, that somehow seem like big jobs in December, done. Write those Christmas cards now, they’ll need to be sent soon anyway and doing a couple a night saves time. Buy any presents you can, now, and if you can get them wrapped, even better. Doing little and often now will make the festive season far more manageable.
