With the festivities over, January can leave many of us feeling uninspired and yearning for some sun and a place to relax. With years of political uncertainty stopping many people from investing in the international property market, the government’s decisive take on Brexit means that it’s subsequently looking like a good time to invest abroad. David King, Head of International at Winkworth agrees; “with some clear direction from the new UK government this will inevitably bring some confidence back to the market, and I am sure those who held off from buying property abroad will be back and ready to go."

Since the European market has been relatively stagnant, particularly at the upper end, there are now “bargains to be had,” says David. Depending on what you are looking for, you can get a lot more bang for your buck in places only a few hours away from the UK. “There is a huge range of property available in France” says David, “and in comparison to the prices of Southern England particularly, you can get a lot more for your money, whether it be a stone house in Lot or a villa in Provence.”

Other countries such as Spain or Portugal are traditionally open to and largely dependent on British buyers, with a varied selection of seaside apartments, villas or farmhouses. Offering more sun year round and a more relaxed lifestyle, “why not take the plunge?” asks David.

From converted farmhouses to rustic village homes, and seaside apartments to mountain chalets, France provides for all tastes and budgets. Current market conditions make some property types, including rural houses, especially attractive, with prices comparatively lower than in the UK. It’s also good news if you want a mortgage, thanks to interest rates in France hovering at historic lows. Provence, a region in southeastern France is known for its diverse landscapes, which makes it a particularly notable location for a second home abroad. With two major airports: Marseille-Provence and Nice-Côte d'Azur, as well as other smaller ones, Provence is easily accessible all year round. With a journey time of under two hours by plane from London, it's a great location to buy, particularly for those who may have to fly back home at short notice for work or other commitments.

In January, you can expect twice the amount of sunshine in the Algarve when compared to the UK. Aside from this, the relaxed, yet lively lifestyle and pristine beaches make it the perfect escape during the winter months. Lagos, a town in southern Portugal's Algarve region is particularly beautiful this time of year. Well known for its historic walled town, breath-taking cliffs and Atlantic beaches, you can escape here in just under 3 hours by plane, with over 30 flights a day to the local airport.
