Our clients have owned Ridgeway Cottage for over 15 years and have lovingly restored this beautiful home with craftsman like skill and plenty of style. They have always remained true to the property’s historic past which includes its use as a blacksmith and the garage was a wheelwrights. In later years the cottage operated as the village shop and the original part of the property is thought to be some 500 years old with the more recent addition being in the 1780’s.

Rooms and Accommodations

  • The Accommodation:
  • The accommodation is spacious and versatile and our clients have in the past successfully run an Air B&B business. There are two staircases and approximately 88sq metres of slate flooring have been laid to the ground floor where this is a superb kitchen with dining area, plenty of areas to sit and relax in front of the open stone inglenook fireplace with brick arch lintel. Sealed unit double glazed wooden windows with attractive ironmongery, also have working shutters and window seats. There is plenty of space for a ‘Rangemaster’ cooker (there was formerly an Aga installed and all the pipework has been left for easy installation of an Aga stove). The heating is via an electric wet system with the electric boiler in the kitchen feeding radiators. Off the kitchen/dining room is a lovely snug/office, in turn providing access to the living room with another feature fireplace with an open grate. The utility room is particularly useful and has an enamel 1 ½ sink and drainer set into a cupboard, there is plenty of room for a fridge/freezer and further fridge, freezer and microwave etc. There is plumbing for an automatic washing machine and double doors lead out onto the courtyard garden. A solid oak staircase rises and turns from the kitchen to the first floor landing which feeds two spacious bedrooms and a super shower room with walk-in shower and modern suite including a wash basin and low flush W.C. All the rooms have been decorated with style using mainly ‘Annie Sloan’ and ‘Farrow and Ball’ paints and paint effects. A door from one of the bedrooms leads through to an area mainly served by the secondary staircase out of the living room. The large master bedroom suite, has a beautiful bathroom with roll top bath with claw and balled feet, and a hand shower attachment. There are lovely views towards Compton Castle opposite. The fourth bedroom again is a good sized double, accessed from either Bedroom 1 or 3. The courtyard gardens are another feature of the property with cobbled floors and stone walls. There are rambling climbing roses around the doors and windows and the larger courtyard is accessed either via the utility room or the living room and is again enclosed by stone walling. It is a real sanctuary with a central pond and large double gates provides access onto the lane. To the side of the property is a public footpath which also serves as access to the garage requiring some improvement. There is plenty of potential with a further area of garden directly behind it. Plenty of beautiful countryside walks are to be enjoyed from the doorstep with Compton Castle and grounds just yards away. Opposite is an historic iron foundry and the vendors have paperwork on the history of the cottage and Compton village which could be handed over to the new owner.
