Women in franchising

Did you know that women account for less than a third of self-employed people in the UK' Thankfully though, between 2008 and 2011, women counted for 80% of newly self-employed workers according to the Office of National Statistics, however they still only accounted for 17% of all directorships, according to Government reports found in the FTSE 100. We believe franchising can be a good solution for women looking to either start their own business or to break the glass ceiling they may find has been holding them back in other companies. The franchise model is a prodigious platform for new business owners. The power and strength of an established brand takes away from the headache of ‘starting from scratch.’ With a strong and comprehensive back office support network, starting with a franchise can be a lot easier while still offering the freedom of the day-to-day running and decision making of a business. Lucinda Richardson, (Ric to her friends) is a Director of our established Notting Hill office, and has worked for the Winkworth brand for 21 years. She started in agency when she was 19, after attending Heathfield School to the age of 16, Sixth Form College in Cambridge for A-Levels and 1 year at secretarial college in Oxford. She knew that estate agency was for her after ‘helping out at Winkworth Kensington when I was a student making coffee and filing – and realising I wasn’t very good at typing!’ ‘I started my career as a lettings negotiator, then moved to a junior sales negotiator in the Notting Hill office. After taking a year out in Australia I returned to Winkworth South Kensington for a short while in sales but moved back to lettings and management soon after. I became a lettings manager and then a partner 10 years ago.’‘Having my emails and taking calls on my work phone means that I can be flexible when it comes to my family life whilst keeping working continuity.' Ric rates the people one of the best parts of her job. ‘I have been so lucky with my staff members, and have made some great friends over the years, a lot of whom I am still in touch with.’ The worst part' ‘Sensitive alarms!’ Ric attributes the role to work around her busy lifestyle. Having ‘hooligans’ Poppy; 2 and 6 month old William means that the flexibility of her working day is perfect. ‘Having my emails and taking calls on my work phone means that I can be flexible when it comes to my family life whilst keeping working continuity. There is a good back up in the office to support this.’ The other best thing about working in the Notting Hill office is the long standing clients. Ric, over the years, has helped people through different stages of their life, from bachelor to married couple to families. One of her funniest moments was watching her junior negotiator bundling Robbie Williams into the back of their, at the time, ‘pretty scruffy company car. They were clearly not a Take That fan!’ Ric advises listening to people as the most important attribute when starting in agency. ‘Treat them how you would like to be treated! If you want to run a Winkworth Franchise, one of the most important elements are your staff. Employ great people and look after them, as the longevity really benefits everyone.’ Winkworth is always on the lookout for women to join our network and we have lots of opportunities around the country for you to start the process to become a business owner. So whether you’re an experienced senior manager in the industry or an entrepreneur who likes all that the Winkworth brand represents, we want to hear from you.
