The pleasure of Reading

Winkworth is pleased to announce the opening of its latest office in Reading, Berkshire. The office is co-owned by Jon Hallett and Michael Foldvari, well-known names in the area with more than 40 years of estate agency experience between them. We got to know them a bit better over a cup of coffee at Picnic, in Reading town centre. Here’s what they told us: How long have you all been in the industry'   Jon: Since 1988, so a pretty long time! I’ve been all through the ranks of estate agency, so know the industry inside and out. Michael: I’ve been in estate agency for 19 years and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.   The UK is a big place, why have you opened a Winkworth office in Reading'   Jon: Reading is a great town and still growing. I’ve worked here since 1988, had my own business here for 19 years and wouldn’t want to work anywhere else. It’s a fantastic place to live with plenty to do, excellent transport links – 25 minutes to London Paddington, close to Heathrow yet surrounded by lovely countryside. It is also an hour to the south coast and offers a fantastic shopping, restaurant and nightlife. The population is upwardly mobile and I expect house prices to rise significantly. Michael: There’s nowhere else to be. I have lived here all my life and have seen the town change a lot over the years. And with the new Cross Rail link to London, I expect to see even more exciting changes over the next few years.   You all live and breathe Reading. Can you name your favourite thing about the town'   Michael: I like everything about Reading, its closeness to London (25 minutes) and the countryside on your doorstep, too. Jon: I love the sheer choice of culinary cuisine as well as its superb mix and blend of cultures. And it only happens once a year, but the Reading festival is great and attracts some of the world’s top musicians. They perform in the town during the August Bank Holiday. It’s the highlight of my year.   You are extremely customer service orientated. Tell me about a time you have gone beyond the call of duty for your clients.   Jon: It’s more about constantly doing what I say I will do, getting the job done and ensuring I deliver. Give me the task and I get the job done and spot an angle others don’t. Michael: I will always do what I can to ensure that a client receives an excellent service and outcome. Some may say it’s beyond the call of duty, but for me it’s just standard service. I regularly help clients prepare their properties for viewings. For example, I recently spent time at a couple of clients’ homes moving furniture, changing light bulbs and ensuring the property was clean. Tomorrow, I’m going over to a property to replace a washing machine where contractors had removed it ready for a tenant to move in. I was out showing someone around a property at 7.30pm last night and I have arranged a one-off viewing at a home that I haven’t even been instructed on yet (with the vendor’s permission of course!). This is just standard for me.   Many people don’t realise that Winkworth is a franchise business. Why did you decide to open a Winkworth franchise'   Michael: Winkworth offers the best of both worlds – a recognised brand that is locally owned. It means that clients are able to access a wide range of services, including our Country House department or our huge database from our networks of offices, while also speaking to someone who knows the local market, works and lives in the town and can offer a personalised service. Jon: I see it as a platform for us to add our local knowledge and expertise and allow us to provide a fantastic service for our clients. Michael: We don’t have a typical franchise feel. With the fantastic network of country offices and strong connections with London (Winkworth have more offices in the capital than any other agency) it’s a perfect fit.   Being an independent business owner within a franchise model means that you have a personal interest in the business succeeding. What makes you different and will ensure you succeed'   Jon: I don’t rest until the job is done and won’t make promises I can’t keep. I won’t accept excuses and want the best for clients.   Any final comments'   Jon: Bring on an exciting and successful 2015!
