Crossrail Developments

Crossrail The development of a train service connecting main train lines to central trains in London has been in the pipeline as early as 1943. However, this plan only developed into the Victoria Line being built. It was only in 2007 that the project for Crossrail was signed off. The new development means that not only will there be new connections between London and main line stations, but also that more central London stations will be connected to each other. New Crossrail stations will be built along the central route of the line at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street – which also connects to Moorgate, and Whitechapel. Ada, one of six tunnel boring machines used for the project. The development of these lines will mean that areas which have previously meant at least a twenty minute commute between some of central London’s most popular sites will be minimised radically with less time consuming changeovers. This could result in properties within the areas gaining new value due to their connection. Homes and businesses in Farringdon will be connected with Tottenham Court Road and Paddington with a more convenient and speedy route. It has been predicted that once Crossrail begins to run in 2018 that around 200 million people will be using the service and that that the route will provide a 10% increase to rail capacity in the capital, all the new stations will be specifically designed not only to be able to cope with the influx of passengers, but also able to last at least a century. While residential areas around Tottenham Court Road and Paddington have always been quite affluent, Farringdon is more low key. The improvement of transport between Farringdon and the West End could mean that the area is built up over a period of years. Crossrail has submitted plans for a six storey office and retail development above the western entrance of Farringdon station. Crossrail land and property director stated; “By 2018, Farringdon will be one of Britain’s busiest rail stations linking Crossrail, Thameslink and London Underground…Our proposed developments will accelerate the area’s regeneration, helping Farringdon re-emerge as a destination in it’s own right’.
