Election 2015: 10 homes to live the Downing Street life for less

There are many people who would love to occupy No 10 or No 11 Downing Street. Here, we take a look behind those black doors before considering ten similar homes that might make you feel you rule the world. 10 & 11 Downing Street No 10 is the official residence of the British prime minister. No 11 is the home of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. However, when Tony Blair was prime minister, he decided to live at No 11, because its living quarters were larger and more suitable for a family. Gordon Brown and David Cameron have done the same so, in fact, it's George Osborne who lives at No 10. The prime minister's press office is at No 12. Numbers 10, 11 and 12 have 200 rooms between them and their distinctive black brick is allegedly faked. The bricks were typical yellow London brick originally, but poor air quality darkened them and now they are painted black to retain the look we all know. Public access to the street was rescinded in the 1980s, and gates were added in 1991. It's a magnet for tourists, so if you prefer a quieter life, read on.
