The Winkworth service in Switzerland

Switzerland attracts foreign residents of all nationalities. Some people are looking for permanent homes due to a career move or retirement. Others regularly travel to Switzerland for their holidays and choose to invest in a holiday home.

Buying in Switzerland

Switzerland is not in the European Union, so EU members must seek permission from the Swiss authorities before setting up residence. Residential permits are issued in various cantons (member states of the federal state of Switzerland) and are issued for up to 5 years, which allows you to stay in Switzerland and to own a property in your own name. This does not entitle you to permanent Swiss residency. A number of permits are restricted by area you may find there is a waiting list.

If you want to retire or work in Switzerland, you have to apply for a Permit  ‘B’ or ‘C’ which will entitle you to live in Switzerland and own a property. A work permit involves paying Swiss tax and the retirement permit involves paying either Swiss tax or a pre-agreed tax based on the value of the property or the rental paid.
