16th century Tudor House on the market with Winkworth Exeter

On the market for the first time in 17 years, Tudor House is one of Exeter’s best known properties and dates back to the 16th century. The property on the market with Winkworth Exeter has many period features including cobbled entrance hall, oak beams and flagstone floor.

Tudor House is the oldest surviving house  in an area known as Exe Island in the historic west quarter of Exeter city. It is believed to have been built in the late 16th century for a wealthy merchant being close to the quayside and customs house which were the main focus of trade in the area at the time.

Its gloriously decorative frontage with family coats of arms, exposed timber frame and leaded light windows make the house a unique historical and architectural gem, and the only one its kind in Exeter remaining in private ownership. Having past through the various hands during the centuries including that of the Burche, Gubbs, Leach and Trewman families, Tudor House gradually fell into a state of disrepair by the 1900’s. In the mid 1960’s the house was purchased by Bill Lovell for just £700 and saved from demolition. Mr Lovell undertook the painstaking task of total restoration on the property and was justifiably awarded a European heritage award for out standing restoration and also a civil trust award in 1975. Much of the original structure remains including heaviteree stone, handmade bricks, rafters, purlins and a newer post that rises up through all four floors, making the property one of the most renowned in the city.

The property has been beautifully restored by the current owner, the spacious property offers versatile living with 4-6 reception rooms, 4-6 bedrooms and 5 bath/shower rooms, (3 of which are en-suite). In addition to the principle property, there are 2 self contained apartments accessed independently and currently generating a good income. The Tudor House is centrally located to the cathedral city of Exeter, the quay side, major road and rail links, has parking for several cars and delightful south westerly facing roof top gardens. Interest is being invited by the sole agent’s and viewings are strictly by appointment for the freehold property.
