Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding area
Alasdair Gibson, franchisee of Winkworth Tunbridge Wells, explains why Tunbridge Wells is one of the best regarded towns in the Home Counties:
“Tunbridge Wells lies at the heart of one of the most scenic stretches of countryside in England, and is conveniently located for commuters – on the Kent and East Sussex borders, just under 40 miles from the centre of London (approximately an hour by train) and only 45 minutes drive to Gatwick.
Many young families and couples who decide to move out of London are attracted to Tunbridge Wells and its surrounding villages because of its easy commute and un-spoilt countryside. A number of these couples and individuals may have grown up in the area and moving back to be close to family and friends is natural; however we do see a good number of people coming to the area who are attracted by the safe and relaxing environment and see it as an excellent place to bring up a family with the ease of being able to commute into London. The state and grammar schools are a huge pull in both Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells with many parents being attracted by the high standards of education at the girls and boys grammar schools and importantly, the very successful state primary schools. Equally, the private schools in the area are numerous and very well-regarded. The area also appeals to those looking for easy access to the Euro Tunnel for traveling into Europe for both business and pleasure.
Demand is very strong from buyers who want to live in the centre of town or, within a short drive of the station in one of the pretty Kent or East Sussex villages which surround the town. Most people registering to buy will state that they want to be “within walking distance of the station” or “within a short drive, in one of the surrounding villages”. The sought after ‘village area’ of the town being most popular.
Unlike many of the larger commuter towns in the Home Counties, Tunbridge Wells offers excellent shopping facilities, attracting shoppers from miles around – saving the hassle of traveling into London. There are a wide range of shops and restaurants in the town from well-known high street brands to small independently run boutiques and cafes. M&S and John Lewis are both about to open ‘Home’ stores in the newly developed Royal Spa Retail Park – which is helping to transform the North Farm Industrial Estate into a thriving conglomeration of smaller business and retail parks. The arrival of these retail ‘giants’ is evidence of the pull that Tunbridge Wells has, for a large number of people”.
