Winkworth Go West for the First Time

June 18th, 2009

Spelling impending recovery for the West Country property market…

Upmarket estate agency Winkworth is opening offices in the South West for the first time – signalling renewed demand from second home buyers and the end of the property downturn in the West Country.  Previously over-inflated property prices in the South West have experienced the biggest reduction in the country (Land Registry, 2009) making property in the South West more desirable to second home owners and accessible to home buyers from the area again, at last.  Low interest rates are also enticing second home owners, who are now returning to the market, as property is seen as a better investment than savings.

Winkworth will open an office in Exeter and also a waterfront office, dealing with high-end property in Cornwall and Devon.  Dominic Agace, Managing Director of Winkworth says:

‘Exeter is both the natural focal point for Devon and also the gateway to Devon and Cornwall.  Winkworth Exeter will be set in prestigious Southernhay West, and will be a great addition to the ever-expanding Winkworth network.  We decided to open in Exeter to satisfy the demand from the continuing large number of buyers moving from London to the South West, and also to further develop the Winkworth country network.

‘In recent years, Winkworth has noticed that many high net-worth individuals are seeking a retreat in the relaxed and tranquil setting of Devon and Cornwall – either as a new start or seaside retreat to accompany their London pad.  Winkworth Waterfront (Devon & Cornwall) will present a new opportunity for us and our new Franchisee, Simon Scott Nelson, to grow in this new marketplace.  Simon joins Winkworth from a respected national brand and is well experienced in the Devon and Cornwall waterfront property market.’

Winkworth Waterfront (Devon & Cornwall)

Simon Scott-Nelson, Franchisee of Winkworth Waterfront (Devon & Cornwall) was previously working for Knight Frank’s Exeter office selling expensive waterfront properties in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset.  Simon now feels the time is right to start his own business, as a Winkworth Franchisee.  Simon says:

‘There is a gap in the market for an upmarket agent to specialise solely in the sale of high-end coastal properties throughout the South West both, to local buyers and to those from out of the area looking for second homes. Having worked in this field for many years I recognise how fashionable fine waterfront properties in this area have become, both new developments and resale, for buyers from around the world. Winkworth Waterfront simply marries this huge demand to some of the region’s finest property.’

Winkworth Exeter

Exeter, the most accessible urban centre in the South West, was a hot spot in the boom. The Met Office opened in Exeter in 2003, encouraging demand for property from professionals. Chris Baker, Franchisee of Winkworth Exeter says:

‘Exeter is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in the UK, with a high quality of life and a low crime rate – it is fast becoming the sought after area in the West Country.  More and more people are being attracted to the area from London and the South East as the countryside and coast around Exeter is world famous and with Exeter only two hours from London, it is conveniently located, with excellent transportation links.  Sellers in the area will benefit from the recognition of a market leading London brand and access to a vast database of potential London buyers.’
