Description

Red House is an attractive red-brick Georgian home located in the heart of Sonning-on-Thames. Built in the late 1700s, with an additional section built around 100 years later in the same Georgian style this delightful home is steeped in English and world history. One time the home of Sir Terence Rattigan, one of England's most popular playwrights. He wrote his most famous internationally acclaimed play "The Winslow Boy" here, in 1945. The building bears a much coveted historical blue plaque stating that Sir Terence Rattigan lived here, one of very few historical blue plaques in Berkshire. It was also the summer residence of former US President Dwight D. Eisenhower and it is believed that some of his strategic war planning and preparations were conducted here. The flexible accommodation of over 4000 sq. ft. is arranged over four floors and comprises six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, attic rooms, a large drawing room, a formal dining room, a country style kitchen/breakfast room, a laundry and an original orangery. The property is accessed via a set of electronic gates and offers parking for several cars and a single detached garage which has potential to be extended. Externally the house boasts is a hard-surface tennis court, manicured gardens and an attractive roof terrace which can be accessed from both the first floor and gardens. There is also mooring for a boat on the River Thames accessed via a path adjacent to the house. The property has been impeccably maintained retaining all of the original Georgian exterior features and many internal features including some stunning original fireplaces. The home benefits from some stunning views of the river Thames and the South Oxfordshire countryside from the upper floors. There is also potential to purchase an adjacent piece of land to add secondary accommodation and additional gardens. This superb home is for sale with no chain complications.
